Over the next few days, I'll be sharing practical lessons, experiences, and strategies from my scholarship journey, from preparing applications to securing a fully funded opportunity to study in the UK and elsewhere.
Whether you're planning to apply for the Chevening, Commonwealth, Erasmus Mundus, Mastercard Foundation Scholarship, or other funding opportunities, one of the most important steps you can take before writing a single essay is to conduct what I call a: SCHOLARSHIP PERSON SPECIFICATION CHECK.
Many applicants make the mistake of applying for every scholarship they come across.
A better approach is to first understand what each scholarship is designed to achieve and the type of individuals they are looking to support.
Think of it like applying for a job. Before submitting your application, you would review the person specification to determine whether your skills, experiences, and aspirations align with what the employer is seeking.
Scholarships work in much the same way.
🔹 Chevening Scholarship: Seeks ambitious individuals with demonstrated leadership potential, strong networking abilities, and a commitment to driving positive change in their home countries.
🔹 Commonwealth Scholarship: Seeks talented and motivated individuals who can acquire knowledge and skills that contribute to sustainable development. The programme places significant emphasis on development impact, international collaboration, and contributing to national and global development goals.
🔹 Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme: Seeks academically talented, service-oriented young people, particularly from Africa and disadvantaged backgrounds, who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to giving back to their communities.
🔹 Erasmus Mundus Scholarship: Seeks outstanding students interested in academic excellence, international mobility, intercultural learning, and pursuing joint-degree programmes across multiple countries.
